What is Counseling? |
Counseling, or therapy, is a process in which one joins with a clinician to address concerns in their lives and identify and work towards goals for the future. This process may include reviewing and reprocessing emotions related to past experiences, learning and using healthy coping skills in the present, and working through feelings and emotions that you may be struggling with. The counseling process can be short or long, depending on your needs.
Counseling is designed to be individualized, meaning that your clinician will gain an understanding of who you are and work with you in the best way to help you achieve your goals. Counseling can involve an individual, couple, family, or group working with a clinician towards common goals. Sometimes the counseling process may include several different modalities depending on a person's needs and current life situation. |
What Can I Expect When I Call to Book a Therapy Appointment? |
When a new client calls for an initial appointment, several pieces of information will be discussed. We believe in assigning clients to clinicians who are likely to be a good fit for them, so a general discussion about specific topics or areas that you want to work on will occur. It would also be helpful if you share about styles that you did or didn't like about past mental health clinicians who you may have worked with.
In the initial phone call we will also discuss availability. We want to be sure that we assign you to a counselor who has the availability that you are looking for, so that you are able to have consistency in your work. We will also discuss insurance and finances. We are happy to explore with you both your in-network and out-of-network benefits and how to utilize them. We can also discuss self-pay options. We are also here to answer any questions that you have about the practice and the process of counseling in general. We understand that this is a new step for many people, and often one of the most difficult in the journey towards healing. Feel free to ask any questions you have. |
Are there Alternatives to Calling to Schedule an Appointment? |
Yes! We understand that people are very busy and may not get a chance to schedule an appointment until after hours. We also understand that someone might only have a quick moment to reach out, and a phone call would take too long. For that reason we chose to open up an appointment request portal, on which you can view clinician availability and request a specific day and time that works with your schedule. You can choose to filter by whether you prefer in person or telehealth visits, or filter by clinician name if you have already looked through the Our Team page and know who you would like to work with.
And if you are unsure about who you want to work with and would like our input, or you want to explore what the cost/insurance would look like first, you can always fill out your information on our Contact Form, and we will respond with personalized recommendations. We hope that these options provide flexibility to the modern client. Just as we believe in personalized therapy, we also believe in a personalized scheduling experience. |
What is the Therapy or Counseling Process Like? |
We would start off with one or more sessions that focus primarily on exploring your reason for seeking counseling, as well as gathering information about your history. From this, we will come up with the goals that you want to achieve in counseling, and discuss possible paths that we can take to work towards those goals.
After this, we would meet as scheduled (usually weekly) to work towards your desired goals. Along the way, we will check in about your progress towards the goals that we established. Eventually, our relationship is meant to end. We hope that all of our clients can one day say to us that they no longer need us because they have reached their goals and are able to maintain the progress they made! |
