Heather DeGuire, MHC Intern
My passion as a mental health counselor is to help people reach a point where they are able to live, think, behave, and feel according to the values that are most important to them. I believe in helping clients to develop healthy coping skills that allow them to heal and grow both in our session and throughout their daily lives. My focus is to build a strong therapeutic alliance that will help us work together towards your goals.
In my work with clients I help them to challenge distorted thoughts that negatively impact their attitudes, feelings, and behaviors. I work closely with clients in learning and implementing healthy coping and emotion regulation skills that work best for them in their daily lives. Through changing maladaptive thoughts and increasing use of healthy behaviors, we will work towards improved mood and increased feelings of self-worth.
As a current Hofstra University Masters level student with a focus in Mental Health, a large part of my training has been in the area of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is a powerful approach in helping people decrease depression, anxiety, and unhealthy behaviors, while building a more positive sense of self and self-esteem. I also incorporate approaches from other modalities in taking an individualized approach with each client I work with. I look forward to working with you in order to identify and work towards your goals.
